SCREENSAVErS

Early in my practice I became interested in how painting as a medium evolved historically to occupy different types of spaces. Working digitally, I began to question whether “painting” needed to involve a permanent substrate or inhabit a fixed time and place. Because digital images never had the same richness as a physical painting, I started experimenting with “screensavers.” These time-based animations where the composition slowly and imperceptibly shifts, serves the dual function of combining a multitude of compositional variants into a single work, while potentially occupying an infinite number of media platforms simultaneously. Because digital files can be replicated endlessly, they also have the potential to proliferate without the limitations of traditional market and institutional constraints.

These screensavers were made during an artist residency at Kamen in Bosnia Herzegovina. Based on traditional Bosnian textiles, they borrow compositional elements from kilims at the residency.
