Dekkenga’s current series of digital paintings began as an inquiry into whether sketches developed for paintings could function as screensavers, and has since evolved into an investigation of form, color, temporality, and the ways medium-specific conditions shape perception. Paintings and screensavers share a domestic function in that both activate an existing site, yet the screensaver exists as a portable digital file rather than a singular object fixed in place and time. Its construction parallels painting as a sequence of contingent formal decisions while also drawing on musical practices of variation, repetition, and remix. Through the recombination of existing structures and gradual shifts in color and form, time becomes a compositional material, translating painterly decision-making into a digital context and repositioning the screen as a temporal and pictorial space rather than a purely functional interface.
